About

In his recent works Joyce uses an arc motif, an elemental form, with references to early manuscripts, plans and notations, or, ‘stuff holding stuff up’. The works have a procedural method, but with repetition and variation, the motifs become out of kilter, and from a rhythmic bending of the light, familiar like the Rings of Saturn, or the passing lights on the nearby orbital highway, errors accumulate, an entropic unspooling, towards chaos and disorder. The creation and displacement of forms has been in Joyces work since the beginning, the paintings reference their own making, manipulating the nature of light, colour and material, a knotty, manifest language of the world.
